Every Monday evening Mix15 takes over Acme Radio Live to talk booze, bartending, and bourbon. Lisa Karkos, the hostess of Mix15, recently started Acme Bourbon Club, a new endeavor here at Acme Feed & Seed. Each month bourbon lovers come together to learn about a new bourbon brand and purchase drink specials at special, membership pricing. Representatives of the featured bourbon brands frequently guest host on the Mix15 show with Lisa to taste bourbon, talk about the brand, and play tunes leading up to the date. In honor of this week’s Acme Bourbon club meeting, we sat down with Lisa to learn more about her, the making of Mix15, and of course, bourbon. Here’s what she had to say. Interview with Lisa Karkos
How long have you been a bartender?
Lisa: I’ve been bartending for 15 years, and 7 of them have been here at Acme.
What is the story behind Mix15?
Lisa: Mix15 was originally called Cocktails and was created by the Acme Radio Live guys. After some time went by and natural changes occurred, the show was rebranded to Mix15. I had been interested in getting involved in the radio, so they brought me in and I loved it. Now I am the host of the show, along with frequent guest co-hosts.
Why do you, and why should other people, love Mix15?
Lisa: My favorite part of doing Mix15 is doing interviews with representatives from different brands. Learning about the backstories of their alcohol not only makes me better at bartending but also, I love bringing this information to other people. If you’re interested in the history of alcohol or bartending, this show is for you.
What is your go-to cocktail?
Lisa: Personally, I love anything with Tequila. But my favorite cocktail to recommend is something classy and creative, typically New Orleans-inspired.
What is Acme Bourbon Club?
Lisa: This is a monthly club held at Acme Feed & Seed on the second floor. Each month, we choose a new bourbon to feature and representatives of that brand come to talk about their product. Bourbon Club nights are open to everyone, but if you purchase a membership, you will receive a pin and special pricing on pours each meeting.
Why should people be interested in Acme Bourbon Club?
Lisa: Acme Bourbon Club is all about creating a community of like-minded individuals. Inviting people to come together over a common interest in an inclusive environment to learn about both new Bourbons and Bourbons they already love. Acme is unique, we garner so many different types of people, it’s all about having fun and experiencing great Bourbon selections.
What Bourbons will be featured?
Lisa: We have already featured Angel’s Envy, Woodford Reserve, and Cooper’s Craft. This month will be Guidance.
What do you look for in a good Bourbon?
Lisa: I love caramel, vanilla, and toffee notes. Anything smooth and rich. The more bourbon I try, the more I have an appreciation for it.
What music do you love and what music do you play on Mix15?
Lisa: We play whatever matches our vibe that day, I love a range of music. At heart, I am a metalhead so I love classic and hard rock. Although, today we started off the day with “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
